Aspen comes to Golden Years
Back in early August 2007 we were notified about a starved and very
pregnant female that needed to leave the shelter ASAP (she was over on the
est side of Michigan) as she was surrendered from a horrid neglect situation
and Aspen needed to be gone before her owner tried to come back an reclaim
her. She lived in a small kennel full of her waste with no clean water and no
love or attention. The mixed breed male dog we believed to be the father of
the pups didn't weigh more than 60-70 lbs and he was skin and bones as
well. When Aspen arrived we didn't think she was going to survive and we
were sure she would lose any puppies she was carrying. Shirley got her to
our vet to get a handle on Aspen's condition. The vet didn't hold out much
hope either although Aspen's heart and lungs sounded good. This poor girl
only weighed 70 lbs and that was mostly puppy and milk.

Never under estimate a Malamute. On August 20-21 not only did she survive
giving birth but she presented us with 10 very fat and healthy puppies! The
whole troop went to the vet on the 21st and boy was this a shock to our
vet. Aspen was put on the scale. She was now down to 63 lbs and that was
mostly milk. We were all set to have to supplement the pups (we had already
been giving Aspen all the puppy food she could eat along with vitamins).
Aspen let Shirley know: "thanks but no thanks I can care for my kids thank
you".

And so the fun began. Keep in mind we are a senior rescue...puppies??
