FAQ
(frequently asked questions)
How much do you sell dogs for?
Our dogs are not for "sale" but available for adoption. The $175 -
$250 adoption donation only covers a fraction of the money
spent making sure the Mal is healthy, spayed/neutered, and all
shots brought current. Some dogs come in heartworm positive
and the treatment can run several hundred dollars.
Why do I have to fill out an application?
We want to make sure a potential adopter is able to handle one of
our rescue dogs and we like to check references to try and make
sure the dog will be going to a good home. Vet references are
always checked to make sure any previously owned pets had
regular vet checkups, required shots and on heartworm
preventative. We want the potential adoptive home to be the last
home for our Mals.
Where do you get your dogs from?
The majority of our dogs come from shelters or neglect situations.
99% of the time we do not know any of the dog's history, so each
one is evaluated and temperament tested before listing them as
available for adoption. Sometimes the dogs are in such bad shape
physically as well as mentally, that they have to be humanely
euthanized. It's a very tough decision but necessary. Someone from
Golden Years will attend the dog as it is gently sent to the Rainbow
Bridge.
Do they shed much?
Oh yes! 2-3 times a year Mals will "blow coat" and it can
be a mess to keep on top of. Fastest way to get through
a blowing season is to brush the dog every day. Frequent
baths also help loosen the hair so it come out faster. The
Mal is going to look like a ratty wild animal for a few
weeks, then they will go back to their gorgeous self with a
nice shiny new coat.
POOF!
Do they dig?
Yes most Mals are known to be diggers. This is a 90 lb girl
looking for the moles in her yard. Not all go quite this far but
they can wreck a flower garden in no time.
Are they destructive?
They can be very destructive if left alone for long periods of
time. A bored malamute can decide to make their own "fun"
and it generally is not considered fun by their owners! Mals
need a job to to be it hiking, sledding, carting, daily long
walks, a fenced yard to run in, etc. Not all Mals are quite
this destructive but be warned..............they can!
Do they bark a lot?
In general, Malamutes are not much for
barking. They have a wide range of
vocalization sounds from woo woo woo
to rumbles and grumbles. It doesn't
take too long to figure out what they
are "saying". Sirens will set off a
howling song like Kiyata is doing here.
