History of Golden Years Alaskan Malamute Rescue

Golden Years AMR started with an idea.........taking in senior Malamutes with nowhere else
to go. Shirley Thomas already had a rescue Mal, Tucker. Then she took in Rio, a
Shepherd/Mal mix. Next came Sheila a 9 year old female that was removed from a puppy
mill in 1999. Shirley decided to formalize her kennels and start a real rescue to actually
place dogs she took in. By October 2000 she was "in business" and took in Rusty, Lexi and
Nanook. Carol met Shirley via Sheila and offered to help develop a web site so the dogs
could be seen by more people. It wasn't long before Carol was in rescue with Shirley.

Older Malamutes can be a little harder to place sometimes. They may have a few health
problems, or through no fault of their own, their owners decide they don't want the
Malamute anymore. An adult dog is actually much easier to deal with. Most are already
housetrained, have developed their personalities, have matured, and they are not nearly
the work a puppy can be. Malamutes are living as long as 15 years now thanks to advances
in vet care and food quality. An 8-10 year old dog may still have many more years left, and
we try to find just the right home for them.

What started out as 5 outdoor kennels runs has now evolved into a nearly completed 10
run pole barn kennel facility. Golden Years has come a long way in just a few years!
